Transformative Therapy with Heart, Humor, and Expertise

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist and one of the early founders of modern cognitive therapy. For over forty years, I’ve maintained a private practice here in Manhattan, helping people shift the way they think, feel, and show up in the world. I’m a strong, warm leader with a playful edge—I like getting to the heart of what matters, and I believe therapy should be as engaging as it is transformative.

My Experience & Perspective

Throughout my career, I’ve supported clients through some of the most challenging moments in our collective history. I was there during the height of the AIDS crisis, helping people navigate overwhelming grief and fear. I counseled New Yorkers in the aftermath of 9/11 and through the uncertainty that followed. I’ve worked with clients through the pre- and post-marriage equality eras, and during the rise of social justice movements like Black Lives Matter. These experiences have shaped my perspective—and that wide-angle lens is something I bring into every session.

Navigating Modern Connections

When I first started practicing in NYC, I was helping clients meet through personal ads in the Village Voice. Today, we’re navigating dating apps, hookup culture, and essential questions like, “What am I even looking for?” Whether you’re exploring casual dating or seeking a long-term relationship, I can help you find your way—drawing on both my own lived experience and the many stories I’ve walked alongside over the decades.

I’ve been happily married for over twenty years.

As someone with mild depression feeling the effects of isolation due to the pandemic, participation in Dr. Swift’s group for gay men has been a godsend.

Ten intelligent, articulate, and caring men meet weekly for 90 minutes in a warm but happily challenging environment. We help make each other better people. The feeling of belonging is critical. It’s the backdrop for the real therapeutic work. Dr. Swift expertly guides discussion and keeps things on track. I’ve been participating for two years. Some members have a longer tenure, some are newcomers. Dr. Swift ensures that everyone feels welcome and that the time is used productively. Group is a subtle but powerful adjunct to individual or couples work. Dr. Swift excels in this setting and fosters much growth among the members.”
