About Will Swift
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who has been in private practice in Manhattan for over thirty-five years. As one of the founders of modern cognitive therapy, I am committed to helping you identify and change the stories you tell yourself. That will help you become more of the person you want to be. Known as a warm and strong leader who knows how to move quickly to the heart of a problem, I also have a great sense of humor.
I specialize in working with individuals, couples and groups. I love doing couples therapy with heterosexual, gay and bi-sexual couples. Incorporating an awareness of meditation and bodywork into my therapy, I am also trained to work with trauma through the use of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing and through imagery. I run a wide variety of groups and workshops, but focus mainly on leading therapy groups for gay and bi-sexual men.
I am happy to meet with people in person at my office in New York, but, when necessary, I am equally comfortable doing sessions by Skype or phone. I have treated people via Skype from Hong Kong, England, and elsewhere in Asia and Europe. I also do phone or Skype sessions with people in states as diverse as Virginia, Florida, California, and Massachusetts.
As the author of three published books, I enjoy helping other writers and artists overcome obstacles in their creative process. I also train psychologists and social workers to do private practice.
You’re not alone in this journey:
Therapy is a collaborative process. As your therapist, you have invited me into your life to form a partnership dedicated to working together toward achieving your goals and needs. From a place of curiosity, we will examine together the various thoughts, feelings and behaviors that can lead to troubling patterns or hinder your success, happiness, and well being. I work in an active and direct way through a variety of techniques tailored to your needs, and work to create an environment that is both safe and challenging.
My practice focuses on treating:
- Intimacy / relationship problems
- Sexual compulsivitity
- Alcohol / substance abuse
- Al-Anon / Codependency / co-addiction
- Personality issues
- Childhood traumas
- Career issues.
During your initial consultation you can discuss payment options. Most of my clients pay me the full fee, and some are able to get reimbursement for part or most of the fee from their insurance company- especially if they have “out-of-network benefits.” Many of my group therapy clients cover most of the group fee with their insurance.
Payment for sessions by check or cash is expected at the time of the appointment unless you make an arrangement with me to pay on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
Please be aware that I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you do not show up for your scheduled individual appointment or do not cancel your appointment at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled session time you will be charged the full session fee. In group therapy you pay for your place in group whether you are there or not. If you are called away for a significant period of time, you can negotiate a brief time-out for paying for your place.
